Much Hype About Nothing

First of all let me begin by saying - What bullshit!

I have had enough of this 'Anna drama' that seems to have captivated the Indian media far longer than I had expected. My patience is running thin and people are texting me every minute for support. If you are an Indian, support! (What?? What if I don't support, I'm not an Indian anymore?) First it was Anna and then Baba Ramdev and now again Anna Hazare. Will it be Baba Ramdev next or someone else? Where is Rakhi Sawant? Why isn't she cashing in? Does the Indian media have nothing better to do than create hype about everyone who says he will be 'fasting'?! When Mahatma Gandhi resorted to fasting, it seemed sensible and not like a media gimmick. His ideologies were strong and he made a lot of sense. These days fasting seems to have become the latest trend.

No doubt corruption is a major issue, especially in India where you get a glimpse of corruption right at the school level. Wan't admission in a great school? Be ready to pay huge sums as donations. Your kid is failing in class? Why not pay for him/her to be promoted? This is a nation where some kids can even buy their education. While those who have the talent and the brains, struggle to prove their worth, some ignorant fools have an enviable career waiting for them, thanks to corruption! Every day is a struggle. You have to fight with the auto-wallahs and convince them to take the correct fare. You have to fight real hard.

When it comes to the Anna Hazare issue, you are not supposed to have an opinion of your own. Well, let me rephrase that - You don't have the Right to have an opinion. Either support Anna or go to hell. It's Anna's opinion that matters. Debates on news channels have stopped making sense as those who are against the Jan Lokpal bill are not allowed to speak, sort of :)

If others in the debate start screaming the moment you speak against the bill equals to not being allowed to speak...right?

But, is fasting going to change things for us? Is a 'bill' needed to root out corruption? What's the guarantee that these people who will represent the Lokpal be honest and not backed by a political power? We have seen enough and know of enough cases to not get fooled by such tall claims. Clean records mean nothing in this country. It's upon each one of us to say no to it and be honest in everything we do. Some people are going overboard with their love for the 'Jan Lokpal bill'. Half of them don't even know what Anna is fasting for, or what the Jan Lokpal bill is all about. I don't see the merits that are glorified and hyped to such insane levels. People are quitting jobs to be a part of Anna Hazare's movement. God bless these souls! I'm wondering what these people will do once the fasting drama is over and things get back to normal. Anna will go back to being Anna and corrupt people will carry on with their corrupt existence.

Completely agree with you...
People are dreaming that lokpal bill will clean the country. But its far more difficult to implement it. Its like one rule for curroption is not working, lets make another rule and things will take care of itself.
God bless us all... :) ....

Well i dun't agree with you people to some extent....yeah may be lighting candle and fasting won't help, but if anything else then why don't you people take that path....
There's always people suggesting that it's not d best way to do it but why don't they suggest the better way then....
I also hate ppl who r jst goin dere fr d sake of publicity nd showing hw cool dey r , also may b ppl don't actually knw wad this bill is but still they r united that shows hw all r troubled bu this corruption problem.
Nd regarding stoping dat roadside corruption, my frnd dat thing is nt as big as 2G scam or CWG scams, so doin that won't help. The country's nt so affected by 1000 ppl bribing Rs.100, its damnly affected by some persons bribing thousands of crores of money.Stopping corrruption at low level is needed ,definitely but this higher order shud curb.
Nd m nt thinking abt result cz u jst cnt predict it vl fail nd nt try, wen u try sumthin u vl knw its result but only after u try.

So may b dats nt d ryt and efficient way fr trying to curb corruption but at dis tym i dunt see any other way either.....

Not many folks like us around :)

I'm fed up of being labeled 'unpatriotic' just because i disagree with 'Anna Hazare', the 'India against corruption' movement, and refuse to wear a dunce cap & shout slogans on the street for something i have no idea about. Was personally out on the streets though, trying to strike up a reasoned debate on the nature of corruption that afflicts our society, the solution/s to it, the lokpal bill in its many manifestations, the infeasibility of a lokpal in the Indian context, the scandinavian model, the concept of democracy, athenian democracy, liberty, Gandhi's world view, the freedom struggle, and so on, with the sloganeers. I second your observation that the people out on the streets had no clue about what Team Anna was up to, and it seemed to them that the louder they shouted the more errorless their demand. It was and continues to be a sad state of affairs. The groundswell of support by the Indian middle class was a farce at best.

The degree to which education enlightens the citizens of a country can be judged from the foundation on which they base their arguments; and when that foundation is based on obstinate and temperamental emotions, while shackling reason and logic, it doesn't assuage well for the country in the 'long run'. What was extremely sad to see were the so called "intellectuals" from the IT world, as well as IIM grads (of which i am a part) making the most ridiculously blinkered, illogical arguments.

I also agree with your observations on 'holier than thou' Kiran Bedi. And that's what i had been writing incessantly on my blog for the past 2 years... i call it the 'Convenient U Turn'.

It's been a long time since i visited your blog, and it's good to see that the fire for justice and reason hasn't waned. Way to go, girl :)

@The Aspirant - I was voicing my opinion on the issue. The whole coverage was a bit too much for me :)
